Rather than be negative in his criticism of current practices, Richard is trying to encourage property owners, custodians, surveyors, and other property professionals to recognise the special needs of traditional buildings.

This website is one way in which Oxley Conservation contribute to the debate about sustainable building conservation.

In 2003 Donhead published Richard's book: Survey and repair of traditional buildings - a sustainable approach.

In November 2002 Richard Oxley co-authored the CIBSE Guide to building services for historic buildings with Peter Warm. The guide gives practical advice and guidance on a sustainable approach to the installation of services in traditional buildings. Funding for the publication was provided by the Carbon Trust and supported by English Heritage, Historic Scotland, CADW and the National Trust

In 1999 Richard co-organised the joint RICS/AECB conference 'Sustaining Our Heritage - The Way Forward for Energy Efficient Historic Buildings' (May 1999). This conference looked at the potential conflicts between energy efficiency and building conservation and was a positive step towards improving the energy efficiency of old buildings in a sensitive and compatible manner.

Richard has also regularly contributed articles to the specialist press on many aspects of building conservation.
